Table of Contents

 Installation

15180A workstation for an Evaluation copy of Amicus Attorney Release 5.5.1 Client/Server Edition might not upgrade successfully to Small Firm Edition.
WORKAROUND: Uninstall the workstation and then reinstall it from the upgraded Amicus Attorney Install folder on the Server.

15125Upon updating Amicus Attorney to version 5.9.0, the Accounting System setting in Amicus Administrator (Configure > Time Sheets) defaults to “PCLaw” if your prior accounting system is not supported in Small Firm Edition. An error might appear upon login.
NOTE: Set your Accounting System to “Amicus Accounting” or another appropriate choice.

15120If Amicus Attorney 2.6.x Standalone is installed the default folder (C:\Amicus), and Amicus Small Firm is installed to the default folder (C:\Amicus\Amicus Team SF), then uninstalling Amicus Attorney 2.6.x causes Amicus Small Firm to be uninstalled as well.
NOTE: BEFORE uninstalling Amicus Attorney 2.6.x, back up your Amicus Attorney Small Firm Edition database to a location outside of C:\Amicus. After uninstalling Amicus Attorney 2.6.x, reinstall Amicus Attorney Small Firm Edition and restore your backup.

4276If one Team Member is installed and added at the same time as another, both Team Members might be assigned the same User ID.
WORKAROUND: Uninstall and reinstall one of the Team Members.

v1013—During installation, Amicus Attorney might require you to repeatedly restart Windows to update the system DLL files.
If you are experiencing this problem, please contact Gavel & Gown Technical Support.

Files

15932/v1204—When performing a Document Search, if the Document you are searching for is marked as Read-Only or is in a folder to which you have Read-Only rights, the Document may not be displayed in the Search Results.

v1200—If you are on the brad page for a particular Document Type and you click the New button to add a Document, the new Document is automatically assigned to that Document Type.  If, however, you are on the All Documents brad page and you click the New button, the new Document is automatically assigned to ALL of the Document Types.

p1019—If a Short File Name begins with numeric characters (e.g., "123 File") and elsewhere in the Index there exists a File beginning with an alphabetic character but which contains the same numeric characters (e.g., File 123), when you perform a "quick find" on your keyboard by typing the Short File Name "File 123", the Short File Name beginning with the numeric characters (123 File) will appear as highlighted.

Calendar

15934/v1190—When a To Do is marked Done, the Deadline date is cleared.  If the Done checkbox is cleared, the Deadline date does not come back.

4678—An Appointment with a Reminder cannot be changed to a daily-recurring Red Letter Day—a message appears, stating that a Reminder cannot be scheduled on or before the date of the previous instance of the Event.
WORKAROUND: Set the Appointment to “no reminder” before changing it to a daily-recurring Red Letter Day.
NOTE: Fixed in Amicus Attorney 2008 Small Firm Edition.

v1197If you have a Group Calendar open with multiple Team Members in the display and you click on the E or L box to assign an Early or Late appointment to one of the other Team Members, an extra Appointment may be created or the Appointment may be assigned to you instead.

p1200If you create an exception for one day in a Recurring Event and change the time of the Recurring Event, it appears in your Calendar on the day that you originally designated as the exception.

p1057—A validation error and "invalid page fault" is generated in the AACNTX.DLL and MFC42.DLL files when in another Team Member's Office after clicking on the Information button for an associated Contact from an Event Details dialog. This appears to happen when the associated Contact to the Event is NOT attached to the File that is also associated with the Event, and the associated Contact is NOT on the Team Member's Contact list.
WORKAROUND: It is recommended that where Contacts and Files are associated with a single Event that they also be associated with each other in order to maintain data integrity.

Time Sheets

15935/v0259/p1079—In Preferences, you choose to keep track of your time in minutes, and set a value for the minimum time, then launch the Timer (start the time count if necessary). Stop the timer and close it. Go to the Time Sheets module, and the Time Entry displays the actual time spent - not the minimum time. If you double-click the Time Entry and click OK, then it will correctly display the minimum time.

4406: If you have set your Time Entry minimum or round up time preferences to an amount that is not a 10th of an hour (e.g. 0.25 hour), the amounts shown in your Time Sheets Statistics page will be rounded inconsistently.
NOTE: Fixed in Amicus Attorney 2008 Small Firm Edition.

E-mail Integration

15937/p1206After creating an E-mail message from within Amicus Attorney, but deleting it from the Outlook Drafts folder before it is actually sent, it is displayed in the ComCenter Today view as a sent message.
WORKAROUND: Manually delete the E-mail message from your Today folder.

15936/v0625In some cases, e-mail integration is not initiated properly and the following message appears when you attempt to create a new e-mail in Amicus Attorney: “Unable to open up the new e-mail, please manually open up the email in your Outbox”.
If you are experiencing this problem, please contact Gavel & Gown Customer Service at 1-800-472-2289.

Library

v1295—If your firm's Library contains a large number of pages (1500+) and you run either a Basic or Power Query that looks for query terms in the Library Page Summary, Amicus Attorney may exit improperly.

p1237—When opening existing Research Queries or creating new Research Queries from a File Brad (Research > My Saved Queries or All Saved Queries), no Saved Queries are listed in the Saved Query Index in the Control Panel of the Research Query view.
WORKAROUND: You can refresh the view and show your list of Saved Queries by selecting any one of the options from the Show Queries drop-down list.

p1235—This issue occurs if two or more Team Members add content to the same Section, Shelf, or Book (parent location) and at least one Team Member is adding content while offline. For example, Team Member A is offline and adds an item in a parent location. While Team Member A is offline, Team Member B adds an item in the same parent location. When Team Member A goes back online and his or her data is merged with the Team Database, the order of the items that the Team Members have added may appear to sporadically switch positions in the parent location.
This issue is currently being investigated.
WORKAROUND: It is recommended that if Shelves, Books, or Pages are added to Firm Materials while a Librarian is working offline or in her Secondary Office, then when that Librarian goes back online or she unpacks her briefcase in her Primary Office, the Administrator should run a Scan Database. To run a Scan Database: From Amicus Administrator, select Database > Utilities > Scan Database.

p1216—Full text querying of HTML documents can result in inaccurate results when searching for phrases or when using the proximity query builder.

Dailies

p1201—The following issue occurs after adding a web page through the News Link or Bookmark Link feature in the Dailies and launching the web page: If the Dailies module screen has been reduced in size and two sets of scroll bars appear (one for the Amicus Attorney Dailies module window and one for the web browser window), the web page's screen blanks out when you attempt to use the Amicus Attorney Dailies module scroll bar.

Notes

4555—If you start to create a Time Entry on a Note but cancel it, a Time Entry cannot be created on that Note subsequently.

Reports

4530—In some circumstances, the Export option that is available when generating a report causes a “missing or out-of-date export DLL” error message.

14697aReports cannot be exported to Word 2007 (under Windows XP or Vista).
WORKAROUND: After selecting a Report to run, click Preview, and then click the Export button in the toolbar at the top of the Preview window. Choose Rich Text Format and set the Destination to Disk file. Afterward, you may open the file by choosing Open from the Files menu in Word and then browsing to the file.

14697b—Reports cannot be exported to Excel 2007 (under Windows XP or Vista).
WORKAROUND: After selecting a Report to run, click Preview, and then click the Export button in the toolbar at the top of the Preview window. Choose Excel 8.0 (XLS).

Document Assembly

4625—When Previewing a HotDocs 6 WordPerfect sample Master Document, some hidden text will be revealed (e.g. 1FullName). This text does not affect the assembled document output.
WORKAROUND: If desired, edit each of these Master Documents to remove the hidden text.

4443Document assembly using HotDocs with WordPerfect does not work if WordPerfect is installed or updated after Amicus Attorney is installed.
WORKAROUND: Reinstall Amicus Attorney at the workstation.

4288—Master Documents for HotDocs with Word that include the Date variable “TodayDay” generate documents with the wrong date information if your workstation’s Windows Short Date Format (set in Control Panel > Regional Options) is not month-day-year.

Import/Export

v0774—If the Time Matters Import encounters a record conflict, the record conflict dialog does not come to the foreground if Amicus Administrator is running in a background (non-active) window, and the import pauses, waiting for your response to the dialog.
WORKAROUND: If the import appears to be taking too long, minimize your windows to check for a record conflict dialog, and respond to it.

v0291/p1460—If you export a File, change the Client's Individual/Corporation designation in the exported text File, and re-import the File, the new designation you are importing is not applied.

Secondary Office

p1285—When you open your Primary Office, the Daily Checks run before unpacking your Briefcase. This only creates a problem if you are unpacking your Briefcase in your Primary Office on a date subsequent to the date when you originally packed the Briefcase to transport your data to your Secondary Office. As part of the Daily Check process, any To Do's that are not marked as "Done" are moved forward to whatever day is the present day (e.g., your Monday To Do's will be moved to Tuesday if you have not marked them as "Done"). When you unpack your Briefcase in the Primary Office, the To Do you marked as "Done" in your Secondary Office remains on the original day (e.g., Monday) whereas that same To Do which was not marked as "Done" in the Primary Office has been moved forward by the Daily Checks to the present day (e.g., to Tuesday). When the data is merged, these To Do's are not recognized as being the same To Do, they are not merged, and this results in the appearance of the "duplicate" To Do.
WORKAROUND: You will need to manually delete the To Do that is not recurring and is not marked "Done".

Miscellaneous

15953/v0994Recurrent locking problems might occur in Windows 2000 or XP.
WORKAROUND: Disable Oplock in Windows 2000 and XP. For details, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base available at http://support.microsoft.com/.

15940/v1213—When using the Transfer License feature to transfer one user's license to another, the new user is not added to any of the User Groups that the old user was assigned to.  Nor is the old user removed from them.
NOTE: Fixed in Amicus Attorney 2008 Small Firm Edition.

15939/v1221—Although the Amicus Administrator allows you to specify that you want to keep more than 10 rolling backups, it will only keep up to 10.  Any backups beyond the 10th are rolled as if you had set Amicus Administrator to start rolling at 10 backups.
NOTE: Fixed in Amicus Attorney 2008 Small Firm Edition.

4454/4487Amicus Attorney windows are displayed with scroll bars if your monitor resolution is 800x600 and Windows Display Properties > Appearance is set to Windows XP theme (rather than Widows Classic theme), or if your monitor resolution is 640x480 and you maximize the window. The Office window is always displayed with scroll bars if your monitor resolution is 640x480.

w0001—The Transfer License feature (available from Users > User Management in Amicus Administrator) reassigns Phone Calls created by the former Team Member to the new Team Member.

p1081The following issue relates to display problems in the Office. The brass nameplate in the Office may have lines running through it.
WORKAROUND: You may need to upgrade your video card or video driver.

Preferences

v0721—A Team Member can change their Profile settings (such as Guest Password or Workgroup) or their Preferences (such as Team Members on New Contacts) while they are Offline or using their Secondary Office. When they later go back online or unpack their Briefcase at their Primary Office, all user configuration changes made for them in the meantime by the Administrator will be overwritten.

Outlook Contacts & Calendar Synchronization

15946/v0269/p1449If you assign a Contact to Contact Groups in Amicus Attorney and synchronize with Outlook, the corresponding Outlook Categories appear for that Contact. However, if you alter the corresponding Categories in Outlook (e.g., add or remove a Category), then all the Contact Groups will be removed for that Amicus Attorney Contact.

15944/v1086In rare cases, a Team Member might not be able to start Amicus Attorney successfully because Outlook Synchronization is failing during the start-up process.
If you are experiencing this problem, please contact Gavel & Gown Technical Support.

15943/v1281If you have any To Do's in Amicus Attorney or any Tasks in Outlook that are not marked Done and have deadlines in the past, should you initialize or resynchronize Amicus Attorney with Outlook then the result will be Amicus Attorney To Do's with Deadlines of Today and Outlook Tasks with Start Dates and Deadlines of Today.
NOTE: Fixed in Amicus Attorney 2008 Small Firm Edition.

15942/v0277/p1427—If you are synchronizing your Palm OS device with Outlook and you also have Amicus Attorney-Outlook Synchronization enabled, then any new Contacts or To Dos that you create on the Palm OS device will appear in Outlook, but will not be synchronized through Outlook with Amicus Attorney. You may also receive a Run-time “5” error message in Outlook.
WORKAROUND: Synchronize Outlook and Palm without Amicus Attorney running. If you have already synchronized your Palm with Outlook while Amicus Attorney was running, you will need to resynchronize Amicus Attorney with Outlook. This process may be lengthy.

15152If Amicus Attorney was previously uninstalled and reinstalled on the computer, then re-initializing Outlook Synchronization might not exchange Events and Contacts properly.
WORKAROUND: When resynchronizing, perform a full resynchronization by pressing <CNTL+SHIFT) while clicking the Yes button on the resynchronizing prompt.

4501—If Outlook Synchronization is configured for a collaborative environment, and a user who does not have Outlook Synchronization enabled creates a To Do in Amicus and assigns it to a user who does have Outlook Synchronization enabled, the first user will receive a corresponding Task request in Outlook once the second user synchronizes their Outlook with Amicus Attorney.

4497/4507—If Amicus Attorney has Outlook Synchronization enabled and set to “Real-time”, and you start Amicus Attorney when Outlook 2002 is not running, or you close and restart Outlook 2002 while Amicus is running, then items are no longer synchronized and error messages might appear.
WORKAROUND: Start Outlook before starting Amicus Attorney. If you close and restart Outlook while Amicus Attorney is running, exit and restart Amicus Attorney to restart the synchronization process.

4357—If you create a new Contact in Outlook from your Address Book, Outlook Synchronization creates a Contact in Amicus Attorney with an e-mail address set to their Outlook Full Name rather than their actual e-mail address (e.g. “Frank Williamson” rather than “fwilliamson@dominionci.com”).

4141—In some circumstances, Amicus-Outlook synchronization might cause runtime and COM errors.

Palm Link

15947/v1198—If an Appointment or To Do is added into the Palm and then synchronized over to Amicus Attorney, and then, in Amicus Attorney you set the Appointment or To Do to repeat, the Repeat Until date is automatically set to 01/01/1970 and you must manually correct the date.

4565/4566—If an Amicus Attorney Contact is not assigned to a Group that is mapped to a Palm Category, and a matching Palm Contact is assigned a Category that is mapped, or vice versa, then a synchronization limited to Contacts that have matching Groups/Categories will create a duplicate in the other application (rather than updating the matching Contact’s Group/Category assignment).

4475—If you uninstall the Palm Link at a workstation, none of the previous configurations are cleared.
If the Link is reinstalled at the workstation, the user should set up the Link as appropriate.

4144—In some circumstances, synchronizing an Amicus Attorney recurring Appointment with the Palm might cause “server busy” errors.

CompuLaw

v1278—When you run the Compulaw Date Maintenance utility to update your CompuLaw Events, the following error message may appear: 'key code not found in any of the rule sets provided'.  The message does not indicate which Event has the caused the error, and the utility pauses until you click OK.  When you do click OK, the process will continue and complete successfully.  The cause of this issue is currently under investigation.

v0285/p1469—The following issue occurs when attempting to delete a CompuLaw Key Event from a chain of Events to which you are assigned along with other Team Members: If you click No when presented with the dialog stating that the Event will be deleted for the other Team Members, only the dependent Events are deleted and the Key Event remains.

v0284/p1468—The following issue occurs when attempting to create CompuLaw Events with no Key Event selected: When you click OK to the message stating that you must select a Key Event, the Amicus Attorney Create Events dialog that appears only has a Cancel button, and the dialog is not dismissed when you click it. From your Windows Task Manager, you will need to select Amicus Attorney and click End Task to close the program.

Accounting Systems

4370—If the firm’s Accounting System is None, a Team Member will receive an "Only alphanumeric characters are permitted by your accounting system for this field" error message if they attempt to type text in the Description field of a new Time Entry during their initial Amicus Attorney session (launched upon installation).

Amicus Accounting

(This section lists Integration issues only. For issues within Amicus Accounting, see the “Known Issues in Amicus Accounting” document on our website.)

15303Initializing or performing an exchange that includes Files without a valid Billing Rate assigned causes the program to crash.
NOTE: Fixed in Amicus Attorney 2008 Small Firm Edition.

15222In the Integration wizard, a “missing aa50.ini” error occurs during pre-Initialization checks if Amicus Workstation is not installed on the Amicus Server.
WORKAROUND: Install Amicus Workstation on the Amicus Server.

13602aIf a new Amicus Accounting Client Matter has the Default Rate option selected but no Rate entered, the new File created in Amicus Attorney will have a blank Billing Rate and a Rate Value set to the Timekeeper’s Normal Rate Value.
WORKAROUND: In Amicus Administrator, go to Configure > Time Sheets > Billing Rates and delete all Separators from the list.

13602b—If the Amicus Attorney Team Administrator has not prefixed the Attorney Rate Label “Contingency” with a digit , then when a new Amicus Accounting Client Matter is assigned the “C” Billing Rate, the new File created in Amicus Attorney will have the Contingency Billing Rate assigned.
WORKAROUND: In Amicus Administrator, go to Configure > Time Sheets > Billing Rates and prefix the Attorney Rate Label “Contingency” with a “Z” (e.g., “Z-Contingency”).

13481If you add or edit a Client Matter in Amicus Accounting when Amicus Attorney is not running, Amicus Attorney is automatically launched but that first Client Matter is not exchanged.
WORKAROUND: In Amicus Accounting, save the Client Matter again.

PCLaw

15476If linking with PCLaw, the Account Inquiry button on the Time Spent brads is not available.

v0281/p1465After selecting PCLaw as your accounting system, the PCLaw menu item does not appear in Amicus Administrator. In order to have the menu item appear, you need to re-start Amicus Administrator.

QuickBooks

s13093Exchanges or initialization with QuickBooks 2006 may fail occasionally, with a 1000 error shown in the log.
SOLUTION: Update your QuickBooks 2006 application to QuickBooks 2006 Release 7, available as of June 15, 2006.

v1193During an Exchange with QuickBooks, the following error message might occur: "There was an error when converting the date value '2002-01-22' (or some such date) in the field [FromModifiedDate]".
WORKAROUND: Close Amicus Administrator and then delete the line "SynchroDate=2002-01-22" (the same date as above) from the [QBPROLINK] section of the AADMIN50.INI file.

v1108—When you create a 'New File for an existing Client', the Client field in the New File dialog defaults to the existing Client. If the Client is an Individual, the Full Client Name in the new File may be formatted differently than in the existing File -- e.g. "John Smith" instead of "Smith, John", which will cause an error message upon exchange. Note that if you select a different Client in the New File dialog before clicking OK to save the new File, the same problem occurs.
WORKAROUND: Create the new job for an existing Client in QuickBooks, instead of in Amicus Attorney.

v0580—When posting a time entry to QuickBooks 2002, a prompt asks whether you want a printout of the time entry. However, the printout does not show the time duration of the time entry.

Tabs3

4598If the Tabs3 Link is configured to use Client ID only, Amicus Attorney might reject the posting of a Time Entry that has a Client ID but no Matter ID.
WORKAROUND: Exit from Amicus Attorney. In Amicus Administrator, go through the Tabs3 Link configuration dialogs (without making any changes). Log back into Amicus Attorney.

p0985a—If you update Client information in Tabs3 (e.g., change an address and phone number) and do not change the information in the corresponding Amicus Attorney Contact (e.g., keep the old address and phone number), when you import your Tabs3 information into Amicus Attorney, the Contact information is not updated and a duplicate is created.

Timeslips

v0975—When a 12-minute Time Entry in Amicus Attorney is posted to Timeslips, it might become an 11:59 minute time slip in Timeslips.

Windows Vista

15192/15193After you install an Amicus Attorney Workstation under Vista, Search Documents does not find any documents and, when you are adding a document to Amicus, the browse does not find any documents.
WORKAROUND: In Amicus Attorney, go to File > Setup > Document > Shared Documents and specify the appropriate drive mapping.

15188/15189After installing an Amicus Attorney Workstation under Vista, attempting to create or edit a Master Document might cause the application to terminate unexpectedly.
WORKAROUND: Edit aa50.ini in each of the following two folders: C:\WINDOWS and C:\User\<username of user currently logged in to Windows>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Windows. In the aa50.ini files, change the ServerAmicusPath item value to equal the drive mapping path to the Team folder on the Server (typically the \AMICUS TEAM SF or \TEAM50 folder).

15182At an Amicus Attorney Workstation running Vista with Amicus Accounting Integration, attempting to use Account Inquiry from File Details causes an error.

15155When the Outlook Contacts & Calendar Synchronization feature is first enabled under Vista, initialization and exchanges do not begin until you exit Amicus Attorney and log back in.

14764If you are not a Windows Administrator, the prompt to update your copy of Amicus Attorney might appear whenever you attempt to log in to Amicus, and you will not be able to run the Amicus.
WORKAROUND: Disable the automatic check for updates. To do this, right-click on the Amicus Attorney icon on the Desktop, choose Properties, click the Target tab, and change the program name from AA50CHK.EXE to AA50.EXE. Whenever Amicus Administrator is updated, the Team Administrator will need to ensure that all workstations get updated accordingly.

14697bReports cannot be exported to Excel 2007 (under Windows XP or Vista).
WORKAROUND: After selecting a Report to run, click Preview, and then click the Export button in the toolbar at the top of the Preview window. Choose Excel 8.0 (XLS).

14434On a computer running Vista, if Amicus Administrator or Amicus Attorney is installed, uninstalled, and then reinstalled to a different location or for a different user, that Amicus application will not open more than once.
SOLUTION: Copy the file aa50.ini from C:\Windows
to
C:\Users\<name of user logged in>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Windows,
replacing the previous copy of the file there.

14424The Amicus Attorney Online Helps might not work under Vista.
WORKAROUND: Download and install the Windows Help program (WinHlp32.exe) for Windows Vista, available from the Microsoft Download Center.
NOTE: Fixed in Amicus Attorney 2008 Small Firm Edition.

N18If Amicus Attorney (or Amicus Administrator) is installed in the Program Files folder in Vista, it will not work properly.
SOLUTION: In order to run under Vista, Amicus must be moved to another location. For instructions, see the “Moving an Installation of Amicus Attorney V+” document, available from the Support > Technical Resource Guides page on our website.
