Daylight Savings Time

N30 (Newly Updated)Beginning in 2007, Daylight Savings Time in the United States and Canada is starting three weeks earlier (on March 11th, the second Sunday in March) and ending one week later (on November 4th, the first Sunday in November). Unless certain Microsoft updates are applied to your computers, it is possible that the time zone settings for your computer's system clock may be incorrect during these periods. Several Microsoft products are affected, including Windows, Exchange Server, and Outlook. Note that Microsoft has made additional Daylight Savings Time and time zone changes since those released in January 2007. For full information, including directions to Knowledge Base articles, recommended preparation, and general sequence of update actions, see the Microsoft Daylight Saving Time Help and Support Center, http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cp_dst.

Provided you apply the applicable Windows updates to all your computers, Amicus products are not directly affected by this change. However, those who use Amicus third-party integrations that affect your Calendar scheduling (like Outlook, Palm and other mobile devices) should ensure that they apply any patches or updates made available by those third-party vendors and follow their recommendations for avoiding appointment inconsistencies.

Remember to keep your Amicus Server and all Workstation date/time settings in sync. Failure to do so may affect the accuracy of system-generated items, including notifications.

It is strongly recommended that you check your Amicus appointments during the adjustment periods to confirm that they are correctly scheduled.

Installation

0762In a split installation, with Amicus Administrator and Amicus Server running on the same server and Amicus Server running as a Service, you must stop the Service before uninstalling Amicus Administrator.

N01You must have Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later installed on the workstation and server before installing Amicus Attorney 5.1 or later.

0341If you wish to run the Amicus Server as a service rather than as a program, you must install Amicus Attorney Client/Server Edition using the Split Install option. This option installs Amicus Administrator and the Team Database as two separate components. Amicus Server then controls access to the Team Database by both Amicus Administrator and Team Members. Note that the Split Install option should only be performed by an Amicus Certified Consultant or by an experienced Network Administrator.

For more information, see the documents, Installing Amicus Attorney Version V Client/Server Edition and Running the Amicus Server as a Service on your Network Server, on the Technical Resource Guides section of our website.

Files

1301If you attempt to perform a Document Search on the content of WordPerfect 11 documents, Amicus Attorney and WordPerfect will stop responding and you will need to use the Windows Task Manager to end both programs.
SOLUTION: Install WordPerfect Office 11 Service Pack 1, available from Corel's website at http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=Corel/Downloads/Details&id=1047022115564

0407bWhen performing an alternate search on a Date custom field, you must enter the date in the following format: Jun 21, 2002 (i.e., the first three letters of the month, the day followed by a comma, and the year in full). You may also use any combination you wish, such as June 21, 21 2002, Jun 2002, etc.

E-mail Integration

N07If you are using Outlook with a POP3 or SMTP Internet e-mail account, Outlook must be running in order for E-mail Integration to function.

N02 If you use Novell GroupWise, note that E-mail Integration supports Novell GroupWise 5.5.4.1 (GW Enhancement Pack with Support Pack 2 or higher) and GroupWise 6.

p1376If you have upgraded your version of Outlook after the installation of Amicus Attorney, you will encounter problems when working with Outlook Synchronization and E-mail Integration. (For example, you might receive the following error message when attempting to send an e-mail from a Team Member workstation: "Server threw an exception.")

Update Amicus Attorney on your Team Member workstation to ensure that the correct DLL files are installed to match your version of Outlook.

p1288The following applies to Team Members whose name or e-mail address is set differently in their E-mail program than in Amicus Administrator or the Amicus Attorney Team Member: When selecting Reply to All in the E-mail Details dialog, your e-mail address will be included as a recipient in the Reply e-mail.

Ensure that either your Name or E-mail Address fields in Amicus Administrator and the Amicus Attorney Team Member match your respective Name and E-mail Address Properties in your E-mail program.

Document Assembly

p1331If you are using WordPerfect 9 without Corel WordPerfect Law Office 2000 installed, or WordPerfect 10, and are attempting to use the Amicus Attorney Address Book for adding Contact information to WordPerfect documents, the only Contact information that appears in the documents are Contact names.

Perform the following procedure to have the desired Contact fields appear in your WordPerfect documents:

1.      From Windows Explorer, open your Windows (or Winnt) folder, and locate and launch the Aa50.ini file.

2.      Under the line, [Version], add the entry: ExtendedMAPIProperties=1.

3.      From WordPerfect, select Tools > Address Book.

4.      In the tree-structure listing of the CorelCENTRAL Address Book window, select MAPI > Amicus Attorney Address Book.

5.      With the Amicus Attorney Address Book highlighted, select View > Columns.

6.      From the Columns window, activate the checkboxes for the Contact fields that you would like to have appear in your WordPerfect documents, and click OK.

p1247When using the Auto-Merge feature with Microsoft Word, a separate instance of Word opens. This is a standard behavior when a program argument is being passed.

If you do not want a separate instance of Microsoft Word to open when creating a document in Microsoft Word, you will need to turn the Auto-Merge feature off. For more information on the Auto-Merge feature, please see Chapter 13 of the Amicus Attorney V User Guide.

p1215If you are a Word user, you must ensure that your macro security settings are set to Medium or Low, otherwise you will experience difficulty when generating documents.

p1202If you are a WordPerfect user and wish to generate a document, the AutoMerge feature will NOT work if WordPerfect is running.

p0878When Microsoft Word 2000 users merge a document and click on the Save to Brad feature, an error message appears citing an invalid page fault in ms09.dll.

Obtain the Microsoft Office 2000 SP3 update from the following URL: http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/Wd2ksec.aspx

Reports

p0664When generating a Report from Amicus Attorney, you may receive the following error messages: "The database file "XXX" has changed. Use the Crystal Report 'Verify Database' option to update your report." "Error detected by database DLL"

All shipping Team Member reports were recompiled with the Crystal Reports driver. When updating from Amicus Attorney Version 4.x or higher, the installer automatically updates all default reports that were shipped with Amicus Attorney V. If any of these reports have been customized or removed, they will have to be renamed or they will be overwritten.

To manually recompile the Crystal Reports, open each report in the Crystal Report program, and from the Database menu, choose the option to Verify Database.

Amicus Administrator

p0835If you use the Client/Server Edition and the Amicus Server or Amicus Administrator improperly exits while Team Members are logged in, Team Members may encounter the following error messages: "Change ISAM Context error" and "Open ISAM Context error".

Please ensure that Amicus Administrator is running when Team Members are running Amicus Attorney.

Streamline Database

N13The Streamline Database utility, which reduces the size of a large Team Database, is available in both the Advanced and Client/Server Editions (Version 5.1.1 and later). Each Team Member must log into their Amicus Attorney Office at least once following the upgrade or update to Version 5.1.1 and before the first use of the Streamline Database utility. When the Streamline Database utility is run, all Team Members must be online and logged out of their Offices in order for the utility to function properly.

Miscellaneous

N16Ensure that the servers on which Amicus Administrator, the Team Database, and accessible Document files and folders reside are configured properly so that Team Members' mapped drive connections to those servers will not be lost periodically. This applies to several versions of Windows. For details, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article “Mapped Drive Connection to Network Share May Be Lost” at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;297684. The article describes two alternative ways of addressing this issue. If you choose to edit the Windows Registry and need assistance, please contact your network technician.

0679/p1053This applies to users who are running Novell Client 32, Version 3.21 or 4.83, and a Novell server running Amicus Attorney Version 5.x, Advanced Edition or Client/Server Edition.

When a user is trying to launch or is using Amicus Attorney in a Novell environment, one of the following error messages appears: "Unable to lock specified bytes” or “login failed”. After clicking OK to this error message, Amicus Attorney exits improperly.

Novell Client 32 Version 3.21 users should update to Version 3.3 or later. Novell Client 32 Version 4.83 users should apply the latest updates provided by Novell.

Updates are available from the Novell site at http://support.novell.com/filefinder/6385/index.html

0215/p1122If you are a Windows 2000 or XP user, you may experience the following: When pressing the TAB key or ALT key within the Event, Time Entry, or Phone Call details dialog, the fields inside the details dialog disappear and only the background color of the dialog is shown.

You need to perform the following procedure in your Display settings:

If you are a Windows XP user:

1.      From your Control Panel, open Display.

2.      Click the Appearance tab.

3.      Click the Effects button.

4.      Disable the option, "Hide underlined letters for keyboard navigation until I press the Alt key".

5.      Click OK in the Display dialog.

If you are a Windows 2000 user:

1.      From your Control Panel, open Display.

2.      Click the Effects tab.

3.      Disable the option, "Hide keyboard navigation indicators until I use the Alt key".

4.      Click OK in the Display dialog.

p1426If you are using a system supporting ACPI power management, while the Amicus Server is running and the Team Members are logged in, the power management "standby" mode will not come on if there has been no activity on the computer after the specified amount of time.

Windows XP SP2

x4618Upon installation of Microsoft Windows XP SP2, the new Windows Firewall might be turned on by default. If this occurs, you will need to configure it to ensure the proper functioning of Amicus Attorney Advanced and Client/Server Editions. Complete the following steps in the Exceptions tab of Windows Firewall, as appropriate.

If you have Amicus Attorney Advanced Edition:

1.     Unblock the File and Printer Sharing service.

If you have an embedded install of Amicus Attorney Client/Server Edition:

1.     Add and unblock the Amicus Administrator program on the machine that runs that program. This is ...\Program Files\TEAM50\AMICUS\AADMIN50.EXE.

2.     Unblock the File and Printer Sharing service.

If you have a split install of Amicus Attorney Client/Server Edition:

1.     Add and unblock the Amicus Administrator program on the machine that runs that program. This is ...\Program Files\ADMIN50\AADMIN50.EXE.

2.     Add and unblock the Amicus Server program on the machine that runs that program. This is ...\Program Files\TEAM50\DATABASE\AMICUSSERVER.EXE.

3.     Unblock the File and Printer Sharing service.  (If you have Amicus run as a service on a separate machine, unblock this service on both machines.)

For more about Windows Firewall, see the Microsoft website at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/internet/sp2_wfintro.mspx.

Outlook Contacts & Calendar Synchronization

p1281Outlook 2000 and 2002 users should not move large numbers of Contacts, Tasks, or Appointments from one folder to another at one time because then the records will not be synchronized with Amicus Attorney. Similarly, you should not delete large numbers of items at one time because the deletions will not be reflected in Amicus Attorney even if you choose OFFICE > Process Deletions from Outlook.

Microsoft has identified this issue as a problem in Outlook 2000 and 2002. For more information, consult the Microsoft Knowledge Base at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?ln=EN-US&pr=kbinfo&#mskb
and search for the appropriate article:
- for Outlook 2000, see article Q249156 - ItemAdd Event Doesn't Fire in Some Scenarios
- for Outlook 2002, see article Q290653 - ItemAdd Event Doesn't Run in Some Scenarios.

You can, nevertheless, move a large number of Contacts, Tasks, or Appointments into a folder that is synchronized with Amicus Attorney if you shut down Amicus Attorney before moving the items, and restart it afterward.

p1251Exceptions to a repeating To Do are not synchronized between Amicus Attorney and Outlook.

p1250Amicus Attorney exceptions to a repeating Appointment are synchronized with Outlook. If you delete the repeating Appointment in Amicus Attorney, all instances are deleted in both Amicus Attorney and Outlook. However, if you delete the repeating Appointment in Outlook, you will then need to manually delete the exceptions in Amicus Attorney or in Outlook.

p1249If a non-Amicus Attorney user creates Appointment meeting requests or Task requests in Outlook, the recipient Amicus Attorney users who are currently Offline will, when they go Online, get duplicate Appointments or To Dos in Amicus Attorney.

1015You can set Amicus Attorney to ignore appointment reminders by going to Preferences > Calendar > Alarms and clearing the Remind Me about appointments checkbox. While this preference is set, you will not receive reminders in Amicus Attorney. However, this preference affects Amicus Attorney only, and the Remind Me field in new appointments will not default to “no reminder”. In Outlook, you will continue to receive reminders for any appointments that are NOT set to "no reminder".
If you do not want to receive any reminders in Outlook, turn them off in Outlook. Go to Tools > Options > Other, click Advanced Options, click Reminder Options, and then clear the "Display the reminder" checkbox.
You may, of course, choose to suppress Appointment reminders in Outlook but keep them in Amicus Attorney.

0289/p1458If you are using Outlook Synchronization with a POP3 account, Meeting Requests may not be properly processed as Appointments in Outlook.

See below for the various ways in which you can ensure Meeting Requests are processed properly.

1.       All Team Members need to be mapped through Amicus Administrator Outlook settings, regardless of whether or not they are using the synchronization. It is important to note that Contacts in the Outlook Contacts Folder are synchronized with Amicus Attorney. Consequently, if you do not wish the Outlook Address Book entries you are mapping to your Team Members to appear as Contacts in Amicus Attorney, then you must ensure that these entries are located in an Address Book other than the Address Book for the Contacts Folder (by default entitled "Contacts"). It is important to note that the name of the Contact you are using must exactly match the name used in Outlook. A quick method for determining whether the name match is to create an Appointment in Outlook from a workstation by clicking Calendar in the Folder list and clicking the New button. From the Appointment dialog, click the Attendee Availability tab, and view the name listed under All Attendees. This is the name that must be used when mapping that Team Member's name to Outlook in Amicus Administrator.

2.      In Outlook, ensure all Meeting Requests are sent in RTF format. To send a Meeting Request in RTF format, select Tools > Options. Click the Mail Format tab. From the "Send this message in format" drop-down, select "Microsoft Outlook Rich Text", and click OK.

3.         Ensure all Team Members are using the same version of Outlook (e.g., 2000 or 2002).

4.        If you follow the measures outlined above and continue to experience difficulties with the processing of Meeting Requests, consult the Microsoft Knowledge Base, at:
http://support.microsoft.com/mskb
and search for the following articles:

or, perform a search on the words “Outlook”, “Meeting Request”, and “Format”, and read the articles that match your search.

p1258If you have Outlook Synchronization enabled, and have selected the Real-Time option, synchronization is done each time you start Amicus Attorney. If you are using Outlook 2002, or you are using Outlook 2000 with the Domestic Security Patch (SR1 file) or later, then each time you start Amicus Attorney, an Outlook dialog appears, stating that “A program is trying to access e-mail addresses that you have stored in Outlook. Do you want to allow this?”
This is a security feature in Outlook 2002. Activate the “Allow access for” checkbox. We recommend that you select 10 minutes from the drop-down provided, the maximum allowable time. Then click OK.
You may be presented with this dialog more than once while your Contacts, Appointments, and To Dos/Tasks are being synchronized. You must click Yes each time the dialog appears in order to continue the synchronization process.
This dialog may also appear later, while you are working in Amicus Attorney or Outlook and have added, modified, or deleted a record.
NOTE: If you select the On Command option for Outlook Synchronization, synchronization occurs only when you request it and the pop-up security dialogs will not appear unexpectedly.

Telephone Pro

1021If you use Norstar’s Computer Telephony Integration product under Windows XP, Amicus Attorney might exit unexpectedly while you are receiving inbound calls. The Norstar Support Department at Nortel confirms that their current software (Personal Productivity Suite 2.0 V4) does not support Windows XP. As of the date of this posting, Nortel was unable to provide a projected release date for Windows XP support.

0279/p1464If you receive a Phone Call with the Preferences or Setup dialog open, you cannot perform any functions in the Phone Call dialog.

You must close the open dialog to use the Phone Call dialog. Note that the open Preferences or Setup dialog may be obscured if you have other applications open, in which case you will need to cascade the windows of these applications to close the open dialog.

Palm OS Link

v0002The Amicus Attorney-Palm Link does not support the Windows Mobile-based Treo 700w smart phones. The link is only compatible with those devices that use the Palm operating system. However, synchronization with these devices can be achieved via a three-way link using the Amicus Attorney-Outlook Contacts & Calendar integration available in the Amicus Attorney Client/Server Edition.

p1321When attempting to synchronize Amicus Attorney with a Palm m500/m505 Handheld using a USB connection, the synchronization process comes to a halt and you receive a message stating that the connection has been lost.

Download the HotSync v4.0 for Windows update (for m500 series users only) from http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/40update.html. After the update is complete, perform a soft reset of your Palm m500/m505 Handheld and reboot your computer.

A300When synchronizing Amicus Attorney V data with your Palm data, the wrong data is synchronized.

When synchronizing your Amicus Attorney data with your Palm data, you must perform the synchronization from your Team Member Office. If you try to synchronize Amicus Attorney data with your Palm data while in another Office (or Tutorial mode), the data for that Team Member will be synchronized with your Palm OS device.

A116Amicus Attorney Version V users may receive the following (or a similar) error message when attempting to synchronize data: "Some desktop records were not copied to Palm OS device. Your Palm OS device may be full."

Perform the following procedure.

Note that if you are certain that all your Contacts in your Palm OS device are in Amicus Attorney, proceed with the instructions in Section I below. If you are NOT certain that all your Contacts in your Palm OS device are in Amicus Attorney, follow the instructions in Section II.

I. Replacing Palm OS Device Contacts with Amicus Attorney Contacts

1.      Click on the HotSync Manager icon.

2.      Select "Custom..." from the menu.

3.      Double-click on Amicus 5.0 Contacts.

4.      Highlight the bullet beside the text that reads "Replace Pilot with Amicus 5.0" and click OK.

5.      Click Done in the Contacts dialog.

6.      Resynchronize your data.

II. Reinitializing the Amicus Attorney-Palm Link

If you are NOT certain that all your Contacts in your Palm OS device are in Amicus Attorney:

1.      Launch Windows Explorer.

2.      Go to the location of your Palm folder and open it.

3.      Open your [User] folder (e.g., Hgavelfolder).

4.      Open the AAContact50 folder.

5.      Delete the following files: AARecMap.dat and AARevInf.dat

6.      Synchronize your data.

WORLDOX Link

N15The Amicus Attorney-WORLDOX Link online help incorrectly states that the maximum length of a Full Client Name (Description) or Full Matter Name (Description) field in WORLDOX is 8 characters. The maximum length of these fields is actually 12 characters.

N14When setting up WORLDOX Profile Groups, ensure that the Profile field you map the Amicus Document Groups field to contains a flat listing of all Amicus Document Groups that users might wish to have assigned to Documents added to Amicus from WORLDOX. Do not use linked WORLDOX Profile fields for this purpose. That is, do not map to a Profile field that lists the Document Groups for each Amicus File Type, as specified by a linked Profile field that lists the File Types.

Accounting Systems

Juris

N03If you were previously using the Juris link with Amicus Attorney Version 4.1.1, changes in field mapping may affect your data. Please contact Gavel & Gown Customer Service at 1-800-472-2289 for assistance.

p1243The Juris Client Nickname and the Juris Matter Nickname together form the Short File Name in Amicus Attorney. Because the Short File Name has a limit of 49 characters in Amicus Attorney, you may encounter difficulties during the import process if the Juris Client Nickname and Matter Name combined exceed this number.

p1210Although a Juris Matter Practice Class can be comprised of one or two characters, you cannot match a Juris Matter Practice Class comprised of only one character with an Amicus Attorney File Type.

You must have two characters in your Juris Matter Practice Class.

PCLaw

1092After a fresh install of PCLaw 6.0, the Amicus Administrator might not be able to map Amicus Attorney Timekeeper Team Members to PCLaw Lawyers. Specifically, when you go to Configure > Time Sheets > Accounting System, select a User, and click Edit, the Select Lawyers window might not appear. The problem has been reported to Alumni Computer Group Inc.

Restart Amicus Administrator. If the problem persists, please call PCLaw Technical Support or call Gavel & Gown Customer Service.

N05Users of PCLaw Version 5.54a and 5.54b and Amicus Attorney 5.x have reported problems with respect to an inability to back up PCLaw, or perform other priority operations, such as end-of-month operations, with these versions of PCLaw when Amicus Administrator is running.

Alumni Computer Group has addressed this issue. To obtain a fix, upgrade to PCLaw Version 5.54c.

A104New files are synchronized but some previously entered files are not synchronized. The following error message may also appear: PLOLE32 Error "One of the index files needs to be rebuilt." Details: This error occurs during a data exchange. It usually occurs if the PCLaw database has been updated to Version 4.05 or later, without updating the workstations and occurs when it attempts to rebuild the database with an old clntinf.dat file structure. In general, any error messages from PCLOLE32.OCX, AAHWND32.EXE are PCLaw link issues.

You may require other recovery of your PCLaw database. Please call Alumni Computer Group technical support at 1-800-267-9378.

Timeslips

x4531Conflicts between Timeslips 2005 and WordPerfect are known to occur. Setting up the Amicus-Timeslips Link in Amicus Administrator while Timeslips is running might cause Amicus Administrator to terminate unexpectedly. A Team Member attempting to post Time using direct posting while Timeslips is running might cause their Amicus Attorney program to terminate unexpectedly. For assistance, please contact Timeslips Technical Support.

p0744/p0786When using Timeslips Version 9.1 or 10, the fields do not map correctly when exchanging information between Amicus Attorney and Timeslips. These inconsistencies were addressed in separate Service Releases for each of Timeslips Version 9.1 and 10.

Elite Legal Billing Systems (ELBS)

p0519When importing time into ELBS, you must select the "Expanded Line Format with User-Defined Fields" format. Otherwise, a message appears citing an improper format. For further information on importing information into ELBS, consult your ELBS documentation.
