Access Control

Access Control provides several flexible ways for your firm to control access to various records and functions by different users. Some of these control levels are assigned by your Amicus Administrator but many can be set by you.

  1. Access Class - A Person's Access Class determines whether they have any right to access Amicus Attorney at all. Your assigned Access Class is shown at the bottom of your Person Edit dialog. "Active Firm Members" have access to Amicus Attorney but "Former Firm Members" do not.

  2. Firm Member Designations - Your Firm Member Designations (shown in the General > My Profile view of your Preferences dialog) determine additional rights. An Amicus Administrator may designate whether you can use Amicus Attorney as a Timekeeper, a Librarian, and/or an Amicus Administrator.

Your Firm Member Designations, as assigned by your Amicus Administrator, are shown near the bottom of the view: "
    • Timekeeper - you can keep Time Entries and have Time Sheets posted to the accounting system.
    • Librarian - you can manage the Firm Sections and Pages of the Library.
    • Administrator - you are an Amicus Administrator.

  3. File - Record Restrictions
Office Access - You can grant limited access to your own Amicus Office to other Firm Members as Assistants.

  4. Security Profile (Not available in Standard Edition) - Your assigned Security Profile limits the areas of Amicus Attorney that you may view and the actions you may take.

  5. Record Restrictions (Not available in Standard Edition) - In general, you can view and/or use only the records to which you are assigned. Access to particular records can be even further restricted.

Cumulative Effect

Security is cumulative across these levels, following a "most restrictive" model. For example:

  • If you are not designated a Timekeeper, you cannot post Time Entries, even if your assigned Security Profile would permit that action otherwise.
  • If a particular File or Contact has restrictions set to make it viewable only by assigned Firm Members, you may not access it unless you are directly assigned to the record, even if you have the general right to access all Firm Files and Contacts (via a Firm Member Designation or Security Profile).
