What's New at Amicus?

We're extremely excited about the recent launch of Amicus Accounting and Amicus Small Firm - two new software packages that dramatically enhance the scope of our legal software product line.

As noted by our company president, Ron Collins: "We are thrilled to offer these exceptional practice management, billing and accounting products. We have taken the Amicus philosophy of providing easy-to-learn and easy-to-use software with advanced features and applied it to these exciting new offerings."

Amicus Accounting is a comprehensive time, billing and accounting software application developed specifically for law firms. It allows users to easily keep track of time and expenses, generate bills/checks and manage receivables and payables. The program also offers extensive trust accounting, general ledger, comprehensive financial and management reporting and much more. It can be run as a standalone program or partnered with Amicus Attorney to provide a total front office - back office solution for law firms.

Amicus Small Firm is a combination of practice management and legal accounting designed specifically for solo and small firm practitioners. It boasts complete and integrated practice management capabilities with time, billing and legal accounting, all in one feature-rich package.

Amicus Small Firm and Amicus Accounting are available now via Gavel & Gown's extensive sales channel. Amicus Accounting is priced at $249 (US) per license and Amicus Small Firm (available to new customers only) sells for $499 (US) for the first license and $349 (US) for additional licenses.

Sending Stickies

As many of you know, Sticky Notes are a popular way to retain and send information quickly. Simply jot that thought down swiftly and later, you can save it somewhere, convert it to something else, or send it along to someone in your firm.

Amicus Attorney 7 offers a new way to create and send Sticky Notes. (FYI: The Sticky is actually a Note until it is sent; therefore you can perform the same actions on it as you can on a note.)

Creating Stickies:

  • Create a note from within the Notes module by typing your text in the New Note area
  • Click on Details to immediately decide what to do with the note (or click on Save to save the note for later)
  • From "Send this note as a Sticky to," select one or more Firm Members and click on OK
  • Click on Send

Responding to Stickies:

  • When a Sticky appears on your screen, you can View (or modify) the Details, Reply to the sender, or Forward the Sticky to one or more Firm Members
  • If you select Reply or Forward, you will have the opportunity to add your message above the original message
  • You can also click on Details to perform further actions on the Sticky before you send it

Embedded Outlook View in Amicus Attorney 7

"I was impressed with the fact that Outlook was now inside Amicus," says tax lawyer Gilles Bujold. "In fact, the integration between Amicus and all of Microsoft Office is very good."

One of the more popular features of Amicus Attorney 7 is the product's advanced integration with Outlook. In Amicus Attorney 7, Outlook e-mail is actually inside the Amicus Communications Center, which removes the need to co-ordinate two separate applications. All Outlook mailboxes are available to the user with Outlook inside of Amicus. E-mail and attachments can be easily assigned to a client/matter.

You can perform Outlook-based actions on Outlook e-mail (both unsaved and saved), including: reply to, forward, delete, print and view attachments. All of this is available from the Outlook view (if you have enabled E-mail Integration),

Unsaved e-mail is not shown in any other views or lists. You can save an e-mail as an e-mail record in Amicus Attorney 7 and assign it to Files and Contacts (see "Saving and associating e-mail and their attachments" on page 283 of the Amicus Attorney 7 User Guide).

To show e-mail for a particular Outlook folder, select that folder in the list box provided in the control panel. The Outlook view displays two extra columns which correspond to special, custom fields set in Outlook by Amicus (and, by default, not usually displayed in Outlook):

  • Saved In Amicus-indicates whether the e-mail has been saved as an e-mail record in Amicus
  • Amicus File-associated Files on a Saved E-mail

"It's rare for me to get a client that doesn't have e-mail," says family lawyer James A. Soukup. "So with everyone having e-mail, it helps me a lot to be able to immediately find any e-mail I've sent to them or they've sent to me. Being able to track client e-mail through Amicus is a real bonus."

FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

Question:
With Amicus Attorney 7, how do I know the name of the server to which I must connect?

Answer:
Amicus Attorney 7 is far more flexible than earlier versions of the program. Users are no longer tied to a single workstation and they can now log into the program from any workstation. This new capability necessitates a new login screen. Once you've accessed Amicus Attorney, it will save your Firm ID, your User ID, and the server that you connect to. All you need to do is enter your password.

The first time Amicus Attorney 7 is accessed from a workstation, the server must be selected.

The "Connecting to Server" field is the name of the computer where the Amicus Attorney server was installed. If you already know the name of the server, simply enter it in the login screen and it will remember it the next time you login. If you do not know the name of the server, you can find it out with a few simple steps:

  1. Go to the Amicus Attorney 7 Application Server
  2. Right click on the My Computer icon (located on the desktop or from within the Start menu)
  3. Select properties
  4. Within the window that appears, click on the Computer Name (or Network Identification) tab
  5. Locate the line stating "Full computer name"
  6. Note the name of the computer prior to the domain name (e.g., Server1.LawOffice.com means the server name is Server1)
  7. This is the server name required to log into Amicus from all workstations

Remember, once you've successfully logged into Amicus Attorney from a workstation, the Firm ID, User ID and Server will be retained - all you will need to enter is your password.
